A Socialite Quits South Beach in favor of Trainer

I am sure you are heartbroken by the title of this blog. You have probably visited this page eleventy-million times to find out how my first days of South Beach went. Too bad. I have moved on to a more Socialitey way of getting fit – or as I prefer to call it, getting awesome. Paying for it.

I am a big fan of working out, but I have pretty much no motivation to do it on my own. So I pay someone to tell me what to do. It might sound silly but it works for me. Trainer and I used to work out 2-3 times a week when I lived in STL in 2007-08 but then when I moved I pretty much stopped working out. I had a hip injury and it hurt a lot to do the basics – lunges, squats, elliptical – so I got my exercise walking the mall [read, shopping]. And in the two years since I quit working out with Trainer I have regained all the weight I had lost plus some. Not cool.

My goals with working out and eating healthy aren’t about the numbers on the scale or the size of my jeans. I would be lying if I said that wasn’t part of my goal, but I really want to get in shape and get my BMI down because it is healthier. I am a big fan of traveling, and shopping, and living in general and I want to continue to do those things for a very, very long time. By getting myself back into shape I can help prolong my life (being the oldest Socialite I am more keenly aware of my impending doom) and the quality of my life.

So to get back in shape I have given myself the next eight weeks to get my butt in gear. Why eight weeks? The semester will be over then (!) and I will either be moving to NYC to start a fabulous internship (fingers-crossed), or moving to CT to live with my parents and study for the CPA exam, or staying in STL.

What are my goals, you might ask. Good question! Trainer made me write down my three goals, and since I didn’t have specific weight/fit goals I wrote what my general Life Goals are:

1. Look Awesome
2. Be Awesome
3. Feel Awesome

Trainer interpreted these goals as follows:

1. Get back to the weight I was two years ago
2. Work out on my own the days I don’t see him
3. Eat right

These all sound somewhat attainable. Yesterday was my assessment where he took measurements (only slightly awkward) and made me do some basic workout stuff to assess my level of fitness. It is low. I used to be able to do squats, lunges, sit-ups, fake push-ups, and planks. Yesterday I was a pathetic muscle-less weakling. Lots of work ahead, and as soon as I can walk and lift up my arms without pain I will get right on that.

Cheer me on in the comments!

  1. this is not only a hilarious and well written blog content wise but also very uplifting and motivational. YOU GO GIRL!!!

  2. “Trainer,” eh? Past precedent seems to suggest there is another goal/dangling-carrot-on-stick at the end of this 8 weeks than just the 3 mentioned… Just saying. ;)
